I am in Indiana, my question is, If a child is 18 (pregnant, not going to school) on SSI for a condition that can be controlled by meds (that she won't take), do I have to continue paying child support?? If so for how long?? If I do, I feel I am supporting her and her unborn child (instead of that childs father paying). Appreciate any answers. Thanks, jae91254 Source: findlaw [link removed] |

You need to read your child support order that the court issued. The order will tell you when your obligation to support this child will end. Usually, the obligation will be until the child reaches the age of 18 but some may say 21 or until the child graduates from college. Unfortunately nobody here can tell you what is in your own order. The fact that your daughter is pregnant is irrelevant. |

If there is a court order that requires you to pay child support, then yes, you have to continue paying support. If there is a court order for support, then you have to pay until one of the following occurs: (1) the obligation terminates pursuant to the terms of the order; (2) the obligation terminates by operation of law; or (3) the court enters a new order terminating the obligation. From a quick google search, it appears that the obligation to pay child support continues until the child is 21 unless all of the following are true: (1) the child is at least 18; (2) the child is not attending secondary or post-secondary school; and (3) the child is or is capable of supporting him/herself financially. If you do what? As far as any purported father of your daughter's unborn child, such a person has no legal rights or responsibilities with respect to the child until and unless the child is born alive and the father's paternity is established in some legal manner. |
